How Are You Today In Spanish?
“How are you today in Spanish?” this is a simple but important question and yet it has an unfortunate answer. We have all had the experience where we ask someone in Spanish, perhaps from a friend or family member, “What do you think?” and they give us a blank stare or look that conveys the reply: “I don’t speak any language.” It’s a sad truth that there are many people who only speak English, and unfortunately Spanish is not one of them.
In today’s culture, it seems that everyone speaks English. We watch TV shows, listen to music, shop on the Internet and even communicate with people with cell phones and landlines. When we go to a Spanish speaking country, we see people who speak no English, but who seem to be able to speak everything that needs to be said. The sad reality is that in many cases, they may only be able to speak very limited English.
I always ask myself, how are you today in Spanish? I try to think about the best ways to approach this question. How are you at work? How are you during your lunch hour? When I’m at home, do I find time to study and practice my Spanish?
It doesn’t really matter what the answer is when I think back on it. I simply continue to practice my words and sentences. I try to use them as much as possible. When I am with friends or family, I ask questions and try to figure out the answers. This helps me to get my point across and also understand what others are trying to say.
Sometimes, knowing how to speak Spanish is all that is needed. When I was a young child, I was asked to say the alphabet. That was all I knew. I found it difficult to reproduce the sounds, so my mom asked me to repeat each letter. I found it hard enough to talk in sentences that I could barely understand the people next to me. Eventually I found a book on the language and learned how to speak it fluently.
I don’t think we can ever measure how are you today in Spanish. I will never know if I learned it that way or if someone taught it to me. What matters is that I am able to speak the language fluently, which gives me more options when I travel to other countries. I like learning a new language and I want to learn more.
